Watch what you Watch!
When I moved into my house earlier this year, I decided not to get cable television. Being a previous cable subscriber I often recall that a majority of the time there was never anything on that was worth watching, and I knew the money could be better used elsewhere.
Everything I watch on my television is a DVD from my own collection or one I rent from the public library or the Redbox. Since Christ entered my life, I have not only made big changes to my personal DVD collection, but I am also very picky about the kind of entertainment I bring into my home.
Truth is a majority of the television and movies I watched before Christ were full of language, violence, sex, and vulgarity. Now I rarely watch these types of things; in fact I really have watch what I watch.
Since the world of entertainment tends to lean a lot on the vulgar side, I do find it difficult to find movies, and television shows that are upbeat, captivating, and clean. Christian entertainment has made quite a comeback in the last few years with wholesome blockbuster films such as Facing the Giants, Fireproof, and Courageous. If you want to find similar family friendly/faith based films, check out your local Christian bookstore. Lifeway Christian Store has a great selection of encouraging faith based entertainment to choose from. They also run sales on their DVDs quite frequently, so be sure to check them out. If you are looking for a good source to go to for movies in general check out pluggedin.com; this is a Christian based website that does reviews on new films and DVD releases as well as television. Their reviews are in depth and very helpful when choosing the appropriate entertainment to watch.
Most films have been issued a rating; G-general audiences, PG-parental guidance, PG-13-film recommended for age 13 and older; and R-restricted to children under the age of 17. While I do not always agree on ratings for all films, I do find them helpful when choosing entertainment. Be cautious when choosing an unrated film. There is a reason the film is unrated, and typically they don’t tend to be family friendly.
1 Corinthians 9:27 (KJV) But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
