Sober, Grave, Temperate
Titus 2:2 (KJV) That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
Sober: sober-minded; having control of your body and mind; self-restraint; self-control; abstaining from wine; sensible
Grave: worthy of respect; honorable; honest; dignified
Temperate: clear headed; curbing one's desire; self-controlled; spiritual sobriety; without wine; sane
All 3 of these traits are very important, but let's look at sober and temperate first. To be sober is to have control over your body and mind. You possess good judgment. Sober-minded is a balanced state of mind arising out of self-restraint. Being temperate is also having self-control, but it speaks of spiritual sobriety: not intoxicated, or controlled by fleshly passions. Sober is physical control, whereas temperate is spiritual control.
Proverbs 4:23 (KJV) Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Both share the meaning of abstaining from wine. Self-restraint and curbing one's desire is more than just staying away from the drink. There are lots of things that can cause us to fail if we don't have self-control. Not giving in to temptations fleshly desires is the key to being sober and temperate.
1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV) There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Being grave results from being sober and temperate. If your actions show that you are capable of making right decisions, you will earn respect from others. If your actions show otherwise, you will never earn their respect.
